Bespoke Orthopaedic Footwear for Bunions

At Bill Bird Shoes we specialise in crafting bespoke footwear for people with bunions, offering an essential blend of comfort, support and style.

How common are Bunions?

Bunions affect over 15 million people in the UK, with around 50% of women and 18% of men experiencing some degree of inward toe bending, which can cause a lot of pain and discomfort throughout the day and night, as well as contributing towards many walking issues and difficulties.

Bunions are bony lumps that develop on the side of the foot, typically at the base of the big toe. They can cause significant pain and enlargement of the big toe joint which often leads to deformities in foot shape. In addition to stiffness and soreness in the big toe, bunions may also affect the lesser toes, potentially causing issues such as retraction or misalignment.

They can also cause swelling and pain in the bottom and top of the feet. Skin can become sore, swollen and inflamed, often leading to further difficulties and pain when walking. We always recommend seeking medical professional advice in respect of any foot condition, however there are many benefits that wearing Bespoke Orthopaedic Footwear can bring to your life.

Common symptoms of Bunions

- An enlarged, painful and inflamed big toe joints, often misshapen.

- Swelling and tenderness over the big toe joint, which can worsen by wearing tight fitting footwear.

- Calloused, red skin caused by overlapping, retracting toes or enlarged joints.

- Limited movement in the big toe, often leading to curled lesser toes.

- A narrow heel which can often need to be supported and held, preventing the foot from sliding forwards putting further pressure on the inflamed, swollen big toe joint.

Common issues with off the shelf Footwear

While some people can wear wide fitting footwear, these can often only provide limited relief, more commonly causing further fitting issues and foot pain.

Off the shelf shoes may have extra width for the enlarged joint, but often a shallow toe box means the retraction and depth of the lesser toes isn’t always accounted for causing pressure in these areas. Often the heel of the shoe is too wide for the heel of the foot, which causes slipping, rubbing and potentially blisters as well as pressure on the forefoot.
