Sustainability

Traditionally, the footwear industry has been a pillar of sustainability, repair and refurbishment. A good quality pair of leather shoes would last many years and could be repaired many times. The on-set of fast fashion has seen the development of many synthetic materials and new methods of manufacturing. These have revolutionised many styles and types of footwear available today. Sadly alongside that we have seen the increase in the manufacture of unsustainable footwear and increased pairs of footwear going to landfill.

At Bill Bird Shoes, we endeavour to produce footwear that follows the traditional aspects of sustainability, championing quality, performance and longevity.

Leather has always been a by-product of the food industry and a fabulous, versatile raw-material, renowned for its breathability, flexibility and strength.

It is an essential raw-material in our trade, used throughout the upper, internal components and insoles, the outsole and heel.

Leather hides are used to create high quality footwear, our expert clickers’ select and position each pattern piece to maximise performance and get the most out of each hide. Off-cuts of leather are used throughout the rest of our shoemaking processes, minimising our amount of wastage.

The life cycle of our footwear can last many years if cared for in the correct ways and regularly maintained and repaired. We are able due to our making techniques to repair, refurb, or even re-last and re-build much of our footwear. We also offer a full repair and refurbishment service to keep your investment in your footwear, going for many years.
